According to the decision of FEB RAS and the RAS Branch of the Earth Sciences, PGI carries out scientific researches by three basic scientific directions:
studies of the structure and dynamics of geographical systems in a transitory zone (land-ocean) and their modeling;
studies of the ways of development and optimization of regional types of nature management, including coastal-sea on the basis of geoinformation technologies, elaboration of regional programs of sustainable nature management;
studies of dynamics and interrelations between territorial nature-resource systems and territorial structures of economy and settlement, elaboration of the programs of sustainable development of the Russian Far Eastern territories taking into account integration processes in the Asian-Pacific region.
The following results of studies carried out by the scientists of the Pacific Geographical Institute of FEB RAS have deserved a special mention as the most significant onesfor the whole period of its existence:
on the base of paleogeographical reconstruction new data on evolution and development of various components of environment and climate, mainly of the south districts of the Far East, in the Quaternary period are obtained;
a series of different-scaled geomorphic maps reflecting the structure and tendencies of dynamics of different rank geomorphosystems of East Asia is constructed;
on the basis of long-term stationary researches new data on the balance of methane and carbonic gas in northern ecosystems are obtained; numerical characteristics of migration and transformation of heavy metals in various links of the geosystems being disturbed and not disturbed by man’s economic activities are established;
the models and methods for vegetation forecasting in geosystems of various ranks and types; the models of the river discharge and other ones are developed;
on the basis of long-term field works an absolute number of ixodic ticks, mouse-type rodents and some other species of animals in various landscapes of Primorskii Krai is established;
together with the experts from other organizations a multiyear monitoring of a quantity of Amur tiger and Far Eastern leopard is being conducted in their habitats;
estimations of demographic and migratory processes as well as population diseases of the Far East are carried out;
the new approach to estimation of natural-resource potential of the territory based on the basis of allocation of territorial natural-resource systems as the most comprehensive objects of estimations of natural resources and also representation about a direct and return resource consumption is developed;
a theory of formation and the development of territorial and industrial systems of various types with allocation of resource-ecological structures is developed. The methods for the analysis of formation processes of such systems and structures in various areas, including seaside areas, are developed;
estimations of demographical and migration processes of population diseases in the region are conducted;
the principles and approaches for complex estimation of regional nature management, including coastal-sea, are also developed in trans-boundary geosystems;
new variants of economic zoning of the Russian east areas are developed; estimation of their economic geographical and geopolitical position is conducted;
the proposals to the strategy of their development are offered;
using the modern GIS-technologies, together with the experts from other organizations a number of large cartographical products is produced, such as a Complex Atlas of Kuril Islands, the Atlas of Primoskii Krai forests, the Atlas of Primorskii Krai (2 editions), a series of maps of the Amur River Watershed, the Atlas of underwater landscapes of the Sea of Japan and others.
in the Pacific Geographical Institute of FEB RAS a Cartographical Fund of published and hand-written topographical and thematic maps operates. More than 3.000 units are stored and used. The Fund is administered by the Information-Cartographical Center.
A number of stationary stations and expedition bases was formed by the Pacific Geographical Institute of FEB RAS for many years of stationary studies in the Russian Far East. Some of them have been created in order to realize concrete projects. After the works were implemented, they were closed, preserved or transferred to other institutes of the RAS.
At present the Institute actively uses only two stationary stations: the Northeast scientific stationary station and a scientific experimental stationary station “Smichka”. At the Northeast scientific station located in settlement Chersky near the Kolyma River mouth of Republic Sakha-Yakutia the scientists of the Pacific Geographical Institute of FEB RAS carry out the studies of dynamics of the Arctic and Subarctic ecosystems over 30 years.
At present the studies on geochemistry of techntogenesis in different links of geosystems were carried out and are being carried out at the Scientific experimental stationary station “Smichka” located in Dalnegorsky Raion of Primorskii Krai. There the colleagues from other institutes of FEB RAS, geographical and soil faculties of the Moscow State University (Moscow), the Far Eastern Federal University (Vladivostok), from other institutes of Russia and also the foreign scientists from the USA, China, Japan and other countries conduct their studies. The stationary station is also used for educational trainings and industrial practices, first of all for the students of the Far Eastern Federal University and other educational institutions of the Far East, Siberia and the European part of the Russian Federation.
Over the last 10 years the Institute accomplished the following large research assignments funded from the state budget:
in 2006 - 2008
Theme 1. Study of structure and dynamics of main components of geosystems in transition zone "land-ocean" and their relationships at the regional and local levels.
Theme 2. Study of role of main natural resources in formation of natural resources management at various regional levels.
Theme 3. Development of methods for study of the territorial structure of economy and the region's population, geographic, demographic and health, and geopolitical factors dynamics and their relationship at the regional and local levels.
in 2009 - 2012
Theme 1. The ratio of natural and anthropogenic factors in dynamics of geosystems of various ranks and types and their components in the transition zone “land-ocean”.
Theme 2. Geographical factors of formation of regional systems for sustainable natural resources management in Northeast Asia and their relationship to the natural resource potential.
Theme 3. Geographical factors and problems of the balanced development and territorial network of regional structures of the economy and settlement in the Far East of Russia.
in 2013 -2016
Theme 1. Structure and functioning of geosystems of different ranks in the transition zone “land-ocean”, the ratio of natural and antoropogennyh factors in their dynamics.
Theme 2. Regional structures and environmental systems in the Far East of Russia, including those in trans-boundary regions, their stability and trends of transformation.
Theme 3. Geographical factors in the process of spatial transformation of local and regional structures of the economy and the population resettlement of the Pacific Russia under modernization.
Besides that, the Institute regularly carried out a row of applied researches and contractual studies related to large investment projects in the region, working out of development programs and strategies for regional and municipal administrative bodies in Primorskii Krai and Far East of Russia, funded by grant foundations, business, and from regional budgets correspondingly.
