of the Russian Academy of Sciences

The Pacific Geographical Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded on October, 1971 according to Decree of the Presidium of Academy of Sciences of the USSR of 29, July, 1971, No. 733. Andrei Kapitsa, the greatest scientist-geographer, a Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, has become a director-organizer of the Institute. At that period of time (1971-1978) he was involved in the studies of complex geographical forecast and rational nature management along with the problems of geography, geomorphology and glaciology of Antarctica and rift systems of East Africa.

From 1979 to 1991 the Institute was headed by the Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Gleb Khudyakov, ScD (Geol.&Miner), an outstanding scientist, a research specialist in the field of geomorphology and the founder of the Far Eastern school of structural geomorphology.

From 1991 to 2017 the Pacific Geographical Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS) was headed by the Academician of the RAS Petr Baklanov. The field of his scientific interests is territorial organization of economy, estimation of natural-resource potential of territories and regional nature management, a sustainable development of regions and management, geopolitics and theoretical questions of geography.

From 2017 director of the Pacific Geographical Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences is Victor Ermoshin. The field of his scientific interests: creation of uniform geoinformation space, application of remote sensing data for geoinformation thematic mapping, development of the principles and technologies of GIS-support for planning of sustainable development, the solution of various nature protection and land use programs.

According to the decision of FEB RAS and the RAS Branch of the Earth Sciences, PGI carries out scientific researches by three basic scientific directions:

At present, the total number of employees in PGI FEB is about 250, including 129 research associates.
